Clik here to view.I absolutely love this piece by Monica Guzman on standing desks in today’s Seattle Times.
To this point, the standing-desk articles I’ve seen usually fall into one of three categories:
- Info-graphic-ey fear-mongering pieces about how deadly sitting is (as the author of a book called “Scared Sitless” I am, of course, no stranger to good-natured, well-intentioned fear-mongering).
- Enthusiastic blog posts that share personal case studies of reduced pain and increased alertness and productivity (which I love, of course, but these posts rarely report beyond the walls of the blogger’s office).
- Snarky reports from world-weary journalists who can’t get over how kooky those standing desk people are.
Monica did some old-fashioned shoe-leather reporting and found a number of good sources, my favorite being the VP at Tableau Software who explained to her why the company sprang for sit-stand workstations for all 1,200 of their employees. She also interviewed me, and there are a few quotes from me in the story.
And (spoiler alert) by the end of the story she is standing to work herself, using a make-shift home-made standing desk that her husband put together for her as she was writing the story.
